Paratuberculosis, a chronic disease of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), is characterized by chronic diarrhea, weight loss, and reduced milk production. A bacterial load exceeding 104 bacteria per gram of feces generally indicates an active infection (Kralik et al., 2014, PMID: 24836889), whereas shedding below this threshold suggests passive contamination.
