Treponema phagedenis ELISA kit

BioLisa® kit Treponema Ab

BIOLK032

Number of reactions per kit

Description

The Treponema phagedenis ELISA kit is an indirect ELISA test for the detection of antibodies to Treponema phagedenis in individual bovine serum samples. This ELISA test is used to diagnose digital dermatitis, also known as Mortellaro's disease.

Treponema phagedenis ELISA kit developed following French standards U47-310 and U47-019 (AFNOR)

Ready-to-use and colored reagents for quick and easy distinction

Indirect single-well digital dermatitis ELISA test (in breakable strips), sensitive and specific for detecting exposure of cattle to Treponema phagedenis

 Short incubation protocol

To improve follow-up of your results over time, we offer a ready-to-use low-positive sample (MRI, Internal Reference Material, BioLisa® MRI Serum Treponema, ref ESTTRE001). This sample enables you to monitor the reliability of the test using a control card. We recommend that you use it for every test.

About Mortellaro's disease

Mortellaro’s disease, also known as digital dermatitis, is a common and highly contagious hoof condition that primarily affects dairy cattle and, more rarely, beef cattle. It is a chronic bacterial infection that appears on the skin between the heels, usually on the hind limbs.

The disease is mainly caused by anaerobic bacteria of the Treponema genus, belonging to the spirochete family. These bacteria thrive in moist, dirty, and poorly maintained environments, which explains the higher prevalence of the disease in farms with poor floor hygiene.

Clinically, the disease is characterized by the appearance of painful, ulcerative lesions that are round to oval in shape, often bright red or "raspberry-like" in appearance, located at the back of the foot between the heel and the coronary band. Affected animals show marked lameness, reluctance to bear weight on the affected foot, and may exhibit a foul odor in cases of secondary infection. Chronic forms can develop into wart-like lesions or become covered with thick crusts.

Digital dermatitis has a significant economic impact on dairy farming: it leads to reduced milk production, decreased fertility, increased veterinary costs, and a higher rate of early culling. It also has a serious negative effect on animal welfare.

Diagnosis & prevention of Mortellaro's disease

Treatment is mainly based on the local application of antibiotics (such as oxytetracycline spray) following hygienic hoof trimming to clean the infected area. In the most severe cases, temporarily isolating the affected animal may be necessary.

Prevention is essential and relies on strict hygiene in housing facilities (maintaining clean and dry floors), the regular use of disinfectant footbaths (e.g., copper sulfate, formalin), routine preventive hoof trimming, and close monitoring of the herd.

Although Mortellaro’s disease is highly contagious, it is not transmissible to humans. It is a multifactorial disease that requires a comprehensive management approach combining hygiene, prevention, care, and health monitoring.

BioSellal has developed an innovative ELISA kit for the detection and monitoring of antibody levels in bulk tank milk: the BioLisa® kit Bovine Digital Dermatitis Ab (for bulk tank milk), as well as in individual serum using the BioLisa® kit Treponema phagedenis Ab, as part of the surveillance of infectious diseases in cattle farming.

The use of such tests on both bulk tank milk and individual serum is particularly relevant for large-scale surveillance programs, as it allows the monitoring of immune status without the need to individually sample every animal in the herd.

To ensure the integrity and efficiency of your kits, follow these storage recommendations:

Real-time PCR kits:

On receipt: Store kits at a temperature ≤ -16°C. This preserves the quality and performance of the kit components.

ELISA kits:

On receipt: Store components at 5 ± 3°C to maintain efficacy. The concentrated wash solution can be stored at room temperature, i.e. 21 ± 4°C.

By respecting these storage conditions, you ensure the reliability and optimum performance of your kits for accurate and consistent results.

  • The shelf life of a PCR kit for the detection of RNA pathogens (viruses) is 12 months.

  • The shelf-life of a PCR kit for the detection of DNA pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasites) is 24 months.

  • The shelf-life of an ELISA kit is 15 or 18 months.

At BioSellal, we are constantly seeking to improve our products. We regularly carry out stability studies to extend expiration dates, guaranteeing that our kits will always perform better and last longer.
