About Bluetongue
Bluetongue (BTV) is a viral disease primarily affecting sheep and cattle. Caused by the BTV virus, the disease is transmitted by biting insects such as Culicoides midges. Clinical signs of FCO include fever, mucous membrane congestion, excessive salivation, swelling of the tongue and lips, mouth ulcers, respiratory difficulty, locomotor disorders, and sometimes death in severely affected animals.
Diagnosis & prevention of bluetongue
DIAGNOSTICS
➜ Diagnostic tests: The diagnosis of FCO relies on laboratory tests, including serological tests such as ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) to detect the presence of antibodies directed against the virus, as well as molecular tests such as PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to detect viral RNA in blood or tissue samples.
➜ Vector identification: Monitoring populations of Culicoides, the insect vectors, is also important for assessing the risk of disease transmission in a given region.
PREVENTION
➜ Vaccination: Vaccinating animals is one of the most effective ways of preventing FCO. Inactivated vaccines are available to protect sheep and cattle against different serotypes of the FCO virus.
➜ Vector control: Management of vector midge populations is essential to reduce the risk of transmission of FMD. This can include the use of insecticides, insect habitat management, and other environmental control measures.
➜ Animal Movement Control: Limiting animal movements from infected to uninfected areas can help prevent the spread of FCO.
➜ Surveillance and Notification: Continuous disease surveillance, including notification of suspected cases, is essential for early detection of outbreaks and implementation of appropriate control measures.
In summary, early diagnosis, vaccination, vector control and animal movement management are key elements in the prevention and control of Bluetongue. An integrated, proactive approach is needed to limit the impact of this viral disease on sheep and cattle herds.

To ensure the integrity and efficiency of your kits, follow these storage recommendations:
Real-time PCR kits:
On receipt: Store kits at a temperature ≤ -16°C. This preserves the quality and performance of the kit components.
ELISA kits:
On receipt: Store components at 5 ± 3°C to maintain efficacy. The concentrated wash solution can be stored at room temperature, i.e. 21 ± 4°C.
By respecting these storage conditions, you ensure the reliability and optimum performance of your kits for accurate and consistent results.
- The shelf life of a PCR kit for the detection of RNA pathogens (viruses) is 12 months.
- The shelf-life of a PCR kit for the detection of DNA pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasites) is 18 months.
- The shelf-life of an ELISA kit is 15 or 18 months.
